Greenwood councilman subject of criminal investigation

Indiana State Police are conducting a criminal investigation into a Greenwood city councilman. The allegations have not been announced.

State police began the investigation into Brent Corey, who is in his third term on the Greenwood Common Council as an at-large representative, after the Greenwood Police Department asked them to take over the case.

Greenwood Police Chief John Laut declined to comment, citing a policy against commenting on other agencies’ cases.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John C. Perrine, spokesman for the Indianapolis District, did not respond to multiple calls by press time.

Franklin-based attorney Mike Kyle, who is representing Corey in the matter, said he does not know much about the investigation at this point.

“I know that Brent’s computer was stolen out of his office, and that’s about the extent of what we know right now,” he said.

In a statement sent to media outlets July 5, Kyle said it was “presumed that whoever took the computer filed the complaint/report against Mr. Corey with Greenwood police.”

Corey has served on the Greenwood Common Council since 2008. He was 25 when elected to serve his first term. He was re-elected for a third term in 2015.

Corey is a lifelong Greenwood resident. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 2001 and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he studied public affairs, in 2005.
